Alletta Laird & Robert N. Downs Cultural Enrichment Center for Senior Citizens
Creative expression is important for seniors of all cultural and ethnic backgrounds regardless of economic status, age, or level of physical, emotional, or cognitive function. It has been shown that art, programming, and design has a direct effect on the ability of older Americans to participate in the arts with dignity and independence. The Downs Cultural Center provides a venue for seniors to be creative, to laugh, and to enjoy their own performances, as well as those of others.
The Downs Center provides an amazing variety of programming for seniors, their families, friends, and the greater Wilmington Community and has featured students from the University of Delaware, Ursuline Academy, Cab Calloway School, Wilmington Music School, and Tower Hill School. Downs Cultural Center provides not only entertainment, but active participation of seniors in arts and cultural events. Each year, Ingleside residents produce and create and perform for their families and friends.

Goals
The goals and objectives of Downs Cultural Center programs make art and culture a part of each senior's daily lives by:
- Creating a broader definition of arts and culture including informal, non-traditional modes that represent diverse cultures
- Highlighting local, regional, and national artists, including resident talent
- Subsidizing programs through sponsorship and providing free programming to the greater Wilmington community
- Creating senior friendly, multi-generational opportunities to be involved in the arts
